Part 1: January – International

Cape Town, South Africa

Peak summer. Golden beaches. World-class vineyards. Iconic mountain views.
Cape Town is where natural beauty and rich culture collide—and January is arguably the best time to go. With warm, dry weather and blue skies stretching across the Table Mountain horizon, it's the perfect place to start your year with sunshine, flavor, and unforgettable adventure.

3–5 Day Itinerary Ideas + Activities

Cape Town offers an incredible variety of experiences—from epic landscapes to deep historical landmarks, vibrant street scenes to quiet moments with penguins (yes, really). I like to mix a little of everything on my trips: some well-loved tourist spots, off-the-beaten-path gems, and cultural immersion. If you're the same, here’s your go-to Cape Town starter pack

1. Table Mountain Cable Car

You have to start here. Even locals don’t tire of the view.
Take the rotating cable car to the top of Table Mountain, one of the New7Wonders of Nature. The sweeping views of the city, ocean, and mountain ranges are breathtaking and make for iconic photos. Go early to beat the crowds—and bring layers; it gets chilly at the summit even in summer.

Pro Tip: Buy tickets online ahead of time to skip the line. Try to go on a clear day for the best visibility.

2. Cape Town Food Tours

Start your trip with a guided food tour in neighborhoods like Bo-Kaap or the City Bowl. These tours are often run by locals who know the stories behind every dish—from Cape Malay curry to bunny chow, and delicious local wines.

My pick: Check out “Cape Town Culinary Tours" or “Eat Like a Local" for small group, high-quality experiences.

3. Hiking Trails Galore

If you love nature and adventure, Cape Town is a hiker’s dream. Over 60 scenic trails wind through coastal cliffs, forests, waterfalls, and iconic peaks.

Top Recommended Hikes:

Tip: Bring water, wear good shoes, and check the wind conditions before hiking.

4. Explore the V&A Waterfront

Yes, it’s a bit touristy, but for good reason. You’ll find live music, amazing shopping, open-air markets, and some of the best ocean views in the city. It’s a great place to unwind, snap a few photos, and enjoy a casual lunch on the harbor.

Don’t Miss: The giant Cape Town sign and the iconic ferris wheel for that perfect Instagram shot.

5. Robben Island Ferry + Tour

A deeply meaningful experience, take a ferry out to Robben Island, the former prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years. Many tours are led by former political prisoners, making this one of the most impactful historical tours you can take anywhere in the world.

Tip: Book this tour at least a week in advance—it fills up quickly in January.

6. Boulders Beach & Cape Point Nature Reserve

No Cape Town trip is complete without seeing the African penguins at Boulders Beach! Walk the boardwalks for great views, and if the tide’s right, hop down to swim with the penguins in crystal-clear water. Then, drive down to Cape Point to hike the lighthouse path and stand where two oceans meet.

Tip: Rent a car for the day—this makes for an epic full-day coastal road trip along the Cape Peninsula.
